The device basically combines the streaming capabilities of similar home theater devices with the ability to see anything on your laptop screen without needing to plug it into your set. That means you can watch any kind of video from a Web browser, like Hulu or Netflix’s instant streaming titles. Hulu is obviously reluctant to give consumers access to the site on TVs (fewer commercials to watch than if you viewed the broadcast version on your set), but Push2TV has been demoed showing the service on a TV. You can also wirelessly access any media files on the laptop or on other devices on your home network. Netgear also eliminates one potential headache by including an HDMI cable with the package.
Even better news is the price: just $99.99. But—and there are always “but”s—there are a few caveats that will keep you from running straight out to buy it. A minor one is that this is a Best Buy exclusive. Another is that it will display video at a maximum 720p resolution, so it’s not an ideal solution for streaming a movie from your laptop’s Blu-ray drive in all of its 1080p glory. The biggest one is that the Push2TV requires a laptop that supports the Intel Wireless Display tech and is equipped with a 2010 version of Intel Core processors. Best Buy will be selling compatible laptops that will include Push2TV for a bundled price.
